Just an important note to freshmen--If you are interested in the art program, you must start as a freshman or no later than your sophmore year. Otherwise, you will have to basically restart your education. I was in another department, but my main focus in life is art. I am a prolific artist who has both technical skill and creativity. I have sold paintings before and have taken figure drawing courses on my own. I read art books, art magazines, and art history courses. I basically have done everything an AFO student does on my own.

My Junior year, I really wanted to transfer into the art school--VCU said that If I wanted to start in the art program, I would have to start over and go to AFO. I understand why, but at the same time, It would mean that I would have to restart my education, which of course would be pointless (unless I had the time and financial resources to be in school for 3 or 4 more years). I wish they could of at least given me some proficiency tests and given a full review to all my past work, and allowed me to opt out of some of the foundation courses. This not even being an option, I would suggest that if you think you want to do art, do it. Don't listen to people who say an art degree is worthless and try do something else, because if you realize later on down the line that art school is where you need to be, it'll probably be too late.

Other than that, once you get in, don't confine yourself to the school. Explore the city and everything it has to offer!
